Challenges

The objective was to create a health platform that enables health monitoring using smartphones.  Additionally, the platform needed to offer healthcare businesses the ability to develop customized healthcare applications according to their specific requirements.

Accommodation for existing business flows

The platform would have to integrate with the existing workflows of different healthcare businesses and enable a seamless transition to enhanced digital capabilities, all without disrupting the user’s current healthcare operations.

Compliance with US and UK healthcare policies

The client is a US-based technology company, serving users in the United States and United Kingdom with their products and services. Due to this, the health platform has to rigorously adhere to the famously strict policies and regulations of these regions regarding healthcare, data security, and patient confidentiality.

Compatibility with healthcare devices

The platform should also be compatible with common and popular healthcare devices, ranging from monitoring equipment to personal wearable devices. This compatibility helps users gather accurate and real-time information regarding patients’ conditions, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and treatment planning.

Solution

Modular Digital Health Platform

To solve the challenges mentioned above, the digital healthcare platform was developed using microservices – small, independent services communicating with each other through APIs. End-user applications will interact with the platform through an API-based integration layer, before using one (or many) of the microservices included. The microservices included in the platform cover a wide range of uses in the healthcare industry, many of which can be found in the visual below.

Modular Health Platform

Because each microservice is independent, applications developed with the platform can freely choose to use any of the well-structured services, rather than having to build everything from the ground up. This massively simplifies and shortens the development process of product applications. These apps can then be made to be compatible with medical devices, further enhancing their usefulness to healthcare service providers.

Result

The digital healthcare platform has drastically reduced the time to market for the client’s new applications. The range of applications that have been built on the platform is vast, ranging from laboratory information management systems and telemedicine applications to pharmacy management systems. The applications have been applied to clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies all over the United States and the United Kingdom. The client is very satisfied with the platform, as well as Rikkeisoft’s expertise in healthcare software development.
